If you have a friend who has visited Australia on holiday or backpacked around Australia they may have already told you a tale about visiting some of Australia’s BIG THING’s. From the eye-catching to the eye-sores, the funny to the foul-looking. Most people either love or loath Australia’s Big Things.
Loosely related, in the way that a load of completely unrelated giant objects made from differing materials and scattered around a vast country like Australia can be. The majority of Australia’s Big Things began life as a not-so-subtle way to attract tourists to an area.
Today, there are over 150 Big Things in Australia and they are viewed as local art sculptures, tourist attractions, or depending how you view them, some could be most definitely be considered as a hilarious giant object, with some gaining reputation as a monstrosity.
I’m pretty confident we are not the only people to have considered taking a massive road trip around Australia to try to visit all of Australia’s Big Things, though I expect not many people have the stamina to complete the mission!
Not many towns could say they have not just 1, but 2 of Australia’s BIG things. Yet Belconnen in Canberra can claim this accolade.
1. Canberra’s Giant Owl sculpture, Belconnen, Canberra, ACT.
Possibly the most controversial of Australia’s BIG things. This monstrosity is reputed to have cost $400,000 to design and build. As controversial as it is obscure and grotesque. I mean, come on, it looks nothing like an owl.
2. Canberra’s Giant Mushroom, Belconnen, Canberra, ACT.
Located at the fantastic Belconnen fruit and veg markets, this giant mushroom doubles up as a children’s playground and is an ideal place for little ones to play on a summer’s day as the mushroom itself provides plenty of shade.
This is much more entertaining than the Owl!
