After 4 months Down Under we were hoping to be getting settled and well on our way to a better life for our family.
So far we have really enjoyed getting to know the beautiful city of Canberra but of course miss family and friends. The huge time difference means it can be hard to have phone or skype conversations, when inevitably someone is either just waking up or going to bed. Throw an overtired 4 year old into the mix and it makes it even more tricky!
We are still job hunting which means that our future in Australia is now undecided. We need to find permanent jobs fast to keep up with the high cost of living in Australia’s bush capital, Canberra.
The Pros of Living in Canberra so far
- A scenic city, with a country town feel, with beautiful bushland on our doorstep
- Wonderful wildlife
- Warm, welcoming community
- Fantastic weather
- Lots of free activities for families
- Very little traffic
- Lots of green space
The Cons of Living in Canberra
- High rental costs
- High public transport/travel costs (bus)
- Limited job opportunities (a lot of jobs in Canberra require you to be an Australian Citizen/have security clearance)
Average rental prices in Canberra have for the first time ever overtaken Sydney’s. Which means for us, our days could be numbered.
Wish us luck with our job search!
